Our Mission Statement
'The mission of Faith Lutheran Church is to faithfully proclaim the gospel while serving others according to God's will.'
Church Staff
Our full-time pastor is the Reverend Dr. Marcia Cox. She holds a Bachelor's degree from St. Olaf College, a Master of Divinity from Gettysburg Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary. She was installed as our pastor in 2007, and formerly was senior pastor at Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington, DC. We are blessed with her energy, good humor, compassion and theological knowledge. Her sermons teach us about God's grace given as a free gift to each of us, and God's love for all of us, God's children.
Our church office secretary is Ms. Fran Dunn. She is not only pastor's administrative assistant but handles all of Faith's paperwork: our weekly worship bulletins, monthly Pathways newsletter, Faith's annual report, answering phone calls, and answering questions. Faith could not get along without Fran's dedication, efficiency, and kindness.
Ms. Lynne Meinhold, a long-time member of Faith, is our custodian. She is also head of altar care! Lynne's commitment to keeping Faith clean, neat and tidy is very high. Her work is appreciated by all Faith members,, who turn out at least twice a year to add their elbow grease to make Faith shine and to take care of larger jobs that custodians generally are not expected to handle alone.
Ms. Janet Richetti is our trustworthy nursery attendant. She takes great care of our children with sweetness and good humor. Our kids are in good hands with Janet, and they enjoy spending time with her. She is a very loving lady.
Church Profile Faith Lutheran Church was founded in Ormond Beach, Florida in 1982 with a congregation of 21 charter members. Faith's first minister was the Reverend Dr. John McCollister and its first meeting place was Tomoka Elementary School in Ormond Beach, FL. Subsequent pastors were the Reverend Ronald Starenko (1982-1987), the Reverend John W. Anderson (1988-1993), and the Reverend Steven C. Anderson (1995-2005). Our current pastor, the Reverend Dr. Marcia Cox, was installed in 2007.
Situated amongst tall pine trees on a corner in the growing west end of Ormond Beach, our present building was constructed and dedicated in 1985. It comprises a narthex, sanctuary, church and pastoral offices, Sunday School classrooms that serve during the week as Montessori school rooms, a school office, choir robing room, church library, small group meeting space, and a sacristy. At the time of the dedication, our congregation numbered 175.
In 1991, our "Friendship Room", a small banquet room, was added to the rear of the sanctuary. It now serves as a meeting room and Montessori classroom.
In 2005 we completed the construction of a new parish hall with a commercial-grade kitchen, adjacent to our sanctuary. As a part of this building program, we also redesigned and refurbished our church office space, Montessori school office and choir loft to meet the changing needs of our congregation. In summer of 2009, our sanctuary exterior was refurbished with stucco, new roof gutters, exterior paint, and hurricane code windows and doors. We painted the sanctuary interior, and added sheer curtains in the sanctuary, and sheers and draperies in the church offices. We bought a new Yamaha Clavinova digital piano for the sanctuary, and we had a new electrified church sign installed along Granada Blvd. In 2010 we had 3 air conditioning units replaced in the sanctuary building and we replaced our sanctuary building's original roof. It now matches the parish hall roof. Landscaping of our new electric church sign is ongoing.
As of 2005, our membership numbered 276.
Our Current Program
Faith has a traditional worship style and conducts Holy Communion at every service. Mid-week services with Holy Communion are held during Lent and Advent. Live music enhances our worship services. Our current church schedule is adult Sunday school at 8:30 a.m. year 'round, and one worship service year 'round, every Sunday at 10 a.m. Sunday School classes for children are available when there are enough children expressing an interest in attending. A nursery is available with a paid attendant during worship time. In 2007 we began to use the new Evangelical Lutheran Worship (red) book for worship services, which was published in conjunction with the ELCA in 2006. It contains ten worship settings and some 800 hymns. Our worship includes a traditional sacred prelude and postlude, a sung liturgy, numerous hymns sung with gusto by our congregation, and a weekly anthem by the choir.
Lutherans enjoy great music and hymn-singing. We have a marvelous sacred classical music tradition created by Johann Sebastian Bach, Luther, and many other great composers. We offer live organ, piano, and vocal music as a gift to the Lord rather than depending upon prerecorded music or music by a contemporary band. Members of the congregation with musical gifts are encouraged to share them with the congregation during worship.
Church Council
Our church council meets once a month to discuss all aspects of the life of the congregation. It is made up of 12 permanent members, all of whom are congregational members in good standing, and are nominated and elected by the congregation. Council officers are a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Additional members of the council serve as chair people of the following ministry committees: Christian education, evangelism, fellowship, property, social ministry, stewardship, worship and music, and youth. Ad hoc committees, such as a call committee, are formed from time to time to attend to matters that are not of continuing concern. We also have a nominating committee that meets several times each autumn to nominate members to serve on the council.
